"Taal" in the Afrikaans language (Dutch origin) means language. Fittingly, The Taalmonument just outside Paarl, set against the mountains in Cape winelands country, is a fascinating step back into the past. It's a must for linguiphiles. The Afrikaans language monument acknowledges the influence of languages such as Dutch, Malay, Portuguese, French, German, Khoi and African languages on the development of Afrikaans. The visitor's centre hosts an informative historical exhibition. You can browse on your own or take a complimentary guided tour. Treat yourself at the monument coffee shop in the gardens afterwards. Alternatively, you can order a picnic basket from the coffee shop or bring your own. The Taalmonument also hosts popular full-moon, stargazing and public concert picnic events. Also see the Taalmuseum (Afrikaans language museum).
